Special Issue: Environmental Challenges and Potential Solutions of China’s Power Sector:

With the fastest growing energy demand, China is now the largest electricity producer and consumer in the world. Among the various power sources, coal supplies three quaters of China’s electricity production, followed by hydropower, wind power, nuclear power, natural gas/biomass, and solar power. As China industrializes and struggles to meet seemingly insatiable demand for power, coal has become the unavoidable fuel of choice in the foreseeable future. Although coal-fired electricity has been critical for meeting China’s energy demand and powering the economic growth in China, it also contributes to environmental challenges such as severe air pollution, climate change, and resource utilization. For a sustainable development of power generation in China, it is essential to adjust the structure of the power industry, mitigate environmental contamination, and reduce resources consumption. Potential solutions such as improving efficiency, recycling and reuse of wastes, and controlling of emissions are critical questions. Market instruments and policies are also useful tools for a cleaner power sector.

Aiming to exploring the current scientific understanding of power generation, environmental challenges, and potential solutions in China, the special issue of Resources, Conservation and Recycling will put together a comprehensive set of articles including reviews, cutting-edge research, and critical commentaries. We invite submissions of novel and original papers as well as reviews to this special issue that advance our understanding of clean power supplies and consumptions in China.

      Topics
Topics of interest for this special issue include, but not limited to, the following:

      • Reviews of previous researches that summarize our state of knowledge and propose future directions
      • Critical commentaries on data needs, opportunities, and roadmaps for better understanding of environmental challenges of power supplies
      • Resource use during power generation
      • Emissions, transport, formation, and health/climate effects of air pollutants from power generation
      • History, status, and prospects of renewable energy
      • Recycling and reuse of wastes during power generation
      • Improvement of efficiencies of electricity consumptions in industrial and residential activities
      • Market instruments and policies for coal consumption control and promoting alternatives
      • The integration of value chain and the dynamics of reforms in power sector

      Submission Format and Guideline
This Special Issue solicits original work that must not be under consideration for publication in any other journal. Authors must follow the “Guide to Authors” instructions available athttp://www.elsevier.com/journals/resources-conservation-and-recycling/0921-3449/guide-for-authors. The author(s) must select “SI: China Power Sector” when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process. Choosing an incorrect article type will result in the SI paper being published as a regular paper. All papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two independent anonymous reviewers.
